What To Wear

Not sure what to wear to your class? Let us help you!

At Starlets SA we do not have a "Uniform Policy/Dress Code" as we want to ensure all of our students feel comfortable and confident with what they wear to classes. Having said that, we do have a few extra handy hints for what students could be wearing to classes.

In order for our teachers to be able to properly see (and correct) technique to make sure our students are growing as dancers, it sometimes means that certain clothes/footwear are more appropriate than others (depending on the dance style). As our students get older, not only does their technique in class become a huge component of their dance learning and ability to progress, but it also becomes a matter of safety. Proper technique ensures a safe dancer and strong body, and being able to properly see what their bodies are doing in exercises will allow our teachers and assistants to make sure this is happening (this includes being able to see their feet when they're pointing their toes which is near impossible to do in sneakers).

As a general note for all students - no socks/tights covering their feet are to be worn in class. This is because it becomes too slippery on the floor and again, becomes a matter of safety for students. If you know that your child has any sort of sensory issues/problems in general with wearing shoes, they're welcome to have bare feet in class (in certain classes, like acro, bare feet is compulsory and is always enforced by the teacher). As another general note, we ask that no denim be worn in dance/acro classes as it can be too restrictive for movement.

Preschool Ballet/Jazz Classes

CLOTHING

For these classes, students can wear whatever they wish, so long as they can move freely. Some students like to wear leotards, ballet skirts and ballet tights, others like to wear leggings and a t-shirt/jumper and some even dress as their favourite Disney princess!

FOOTWEAR

Students can wear more traditional Ballet shoes, ballet flats or any shoe they’re comfortable in. It is recommended to have shoes that students can stretch their feet in, however at this age it isn’t essential. If your child has any sensory issues, they’re also welcome to go bare foot! We only ask that if your child chooses to wear no shoes, they also have no socks/tights that cover their feet (as it can be too slippery on the floor).

Thursday Evening Ballet/Jazz Classes

CLOTHING

For these classes, students can wear whatever they wish, so long as they can move freely. Some students like to wear leotards, ballet skirts and ballet tights, others like to wear leggings and a t-shirt/jumper and some even dress as their favourite Disney princess!

FOOTWEAR

Students can wear more traditional Ballet shoes or ballet flats. At this age, we prefer students not to wear sneakers as it can be hard for them to develop their technique in shoes they can’t stretch their feet in.

If your child has any sensory issues, they’re also welcome to go bare foot! We only ask that if your child chooses to wear no shoes, they also have no socks/tights that cover their feet (as it can be too slippery on the floor).

Junior and Intermediate Ballet/Jazz Classes

CLOTHING

Students can wear whatever they wish, so long as they can move freely. Some students like to wear leotards, ballet skirts and ballet tights, others like to wear leggings and a t-shirt/jumper. Clothes that are slightly more fitted (though they do not have to be skin tight) are preferred so that the teacher can properly see the students body (to be able to correct posture and technique).

FOOTWEAR

  • Ballet Shoes (can be worn for both Ballet and Jazz)

  • Jazz Shoes (due to the raised heel, these can be worn for Jazz only, not Ballet)

If your child has any sensory issues, they’re also welcome to go bare foot! We only ask that if your child chooses to wear no shoes, they also have no socks/tights that cover their feet (as it can be too slippery on the floor). At this age, Foot Undies can also be bought (if you’re unsure what this is, a simple google search should point you in the right direction!).

Acro Classes

CLOTHING

Students can wear whatever they wish, so long as they can move freely. Some students like to wear leotards and dance tights, others like to wear leggings and a t-shirt/jumper. Clothes that are slightly more fitted (though they do not have to be skin tight) are preferred so that the teacher can safely spot any skills and properly see the students body (to be able to correct posture and technique). We also strongly recommend clothes that are suitable for going upside down during certain skills to keep students covered (such as having a crop top/fitted singlet/leotard underneath anything that may be loose fitting).

FOOTWEAR

  • Bare feet only

We ask that if your child chooses to wear tights, they have ones that don’t cover their feet (such as convertible tights with holes in the bottom that can be taken off their feet, or footless tights).

Due to students having bare feet in the class, we also strongly recommend wearing easy to take off/put on shoes to and from classes (such as slides, slippers, crocs, ballet flats, etc.) and not sneakers or boots with lots of laces.

NO LOOSE JEWELLERY - this includes necklaces, bracelets, anklets and big earrings (studs and sleepers for earrings are acceptable)

Hair is to always be up in a braided ponytail (this is for safety reasons when performing skills).

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Students can have their hair however they wish so long as it is off their face and does not get in the way while they are dancing (particularly for Junior, Intermediate and Senior dance students). For all Acro classes, students are required to have their hair tied back in a braided ponytail.

  • Dance shoes and tights can be bought at any Dance Store. Sometimes places like Kmart, Target and Big W can sell these for slightly cheaper, however they are not always in stock.
